The Guerrilla Girls Of PKK

January 2005

Following a spate of recent attacks, Turkey is desperate to eliminate the PKK. But as this exclusive report reveals, uprooting them from their heavily armed base in Northern Iraq will be difficult.

The PKK have effectively set up their own mini-state in the mountains, complete with dental surgeries and medical clinics and powered hydroelectricity. This retreat is guarded an army of 10,000, making it difficult for the Turks to approach. But with American support, Turkey hopes it will finally crush the rebel movement.

Turkey Kurds

December 2004

How is the prospect of EU membership changing Turkey? We examine the implications of reforms introduced under pressure from Brussels.

For the Kurds, things have improved considerably. There's now a weekly Kurdish TV broadcast and several prominent Kurdish activists have been released from jail. But more still needs to be done. Kurds are abducted and murdered on a regular basis and the human rights violations still go on.

The Kurds

1st July 1991

The fight for a Kurdish state has been led for over forty years wealthy landowners.

But now a new force has emerged; the PKK, or Kurdish Workers' Party. This film follows the PKK as they move along the mountainous border between Turkish and Iraqi Kurdistan. The border between Turkey and Iraq has been swept away the UN-declared safe-haven and the PKK are garnering support from Iraqi Kurds. The PKK teach a Maoist philosophy to their recruits and, uniquely among Middle Eastern people, the women study, live and fight along with the men.

Law and Reality - Turkey

Kurds are frustrated the slow pace of change in Turkey. Although recent political reforms have granted them more rights, change on the ground remains slow.

After centuries of prohibition, Kurdish can now be spoken freely. But many other restrictions remain in place. "It is forbidden to use Kurdish names with 'W' because the letter doesn't exist in the Turkish alphabet," complains Huseyin from the Pro-Kurdish party. Any broadcasts in Kurdish have to be vetted a month in advance and even non-political Kurdish music needs to be approved. "How can you produce news a month in advance? It's impossible," despairs editor Cemal Dogan. There are allegations that Kurdish villages are denied irrigation, forcing families to emigrate to the cities. The days of heavy handed police brutality may be over but a lot more still needs to be done before Kurds feel truly equal.
